Dorothy Day

8. Jesus declares that those who follow him must "take up the cross." (Mat. 10:38) What is Dorothy's cross in baptizing her daughter and joining the church? Her love for Forster is great, but greater is still her love for her child- and for her God.

-Dorothy carries the cross of the life that she could have compared to the life that she is living. Dorothy knows that she could be well-off, be married, and happy with luxuries in this world; but the other side of her sees the poverty in the world, and her mind and soul will not let her leave it. Her new found unconditional love for God feeds on her selfless acts to the poor, which are what keep her going in life. Before, when she did have a nice house, a "boyfriend", and a happy life, she felt that something was missing, and that something she found was God. Even though through God she gave up everything that she came to love in life, her love of God out weighed her love of worldly possessions. This was a cross that Dorothy carried everyday, and at times kept her feeling lonely. In the end though, she chose the life of a humble servant, working for God and working for the poor. She chose to carry this cross, because God was so important to her.
